Trying to catch up

I will be posting some entries over the next couple of days as I get pictures and videos available.  They will not be in a particular order for the moment but should give a sense of our adventures.  I have had wonderful conversations with some of the parishioners since I returned and it is great to see the interest shared by so many people.

From the City of Lights (and rain!)

Since I did not get a post out earlier this week, I thought I would do a posting from Paris where I am spending the week. This is a holiday weekend in much of Europe (Labor Day and Ascension Thursday). I arrived on Monday afternoon and made my way to the Montmartre area of Paris. I am staying in an apartment of the friends of one of the employees of the College. It is a bit out of the middle of things but in close access to the Metro and bus lines so I am having no trouble getting around. The bigger challenge has been the rain. It has been falling every day for a good part of the day. This has put a little crimp in my plans but with a little rearranging it is working out fine so far. I had only a few things I wanted to do. I have accomplished a couple already. On Tuesday I took a cooking class. A small group (4 of us) in the instructors apartment. I had trouble with a closed metro line and so arrived a little late. The halfway point

It is hard to believe that we have completed week 6 of our 12 week program.  The time has really flown by.  We have just six weeks to go and one of those weeks will be a retreat in Assisi.  Most of the guys are going to the Holy Land next Thursday.  Because I had the opportunity to go to Egypt I decided to forgo this trip although I am hoping to make it to the Holy Land in the not too distant future.  I will head to London for a couple days.  A tourist visa from the US gives us 90 days to stay in what is known as the Schengen Zone.  It encompasses most of Europe.  In fact, since my last sabbatical Hungary and a couple other countries have joined as well.  Since my extension means that I will be here 106 days I need to get out of the Schengen Zone for a few more days.  That suspends the count of days.  So, my trip to Egypt took care of some of those days and the time in London (which surprisingly is not part of the Schengen) will t...

Cairo

Today we spent the entire day visiting a variety of sites around Cairo.  We began with the Egyptian Museum which contains the historic treasures of Egypt.  We learned a little about the history of the various kingdoms and dynasties.  It was impressive to learn that some of what we were seeing was over 4500 years old.  Some of it is in amazing condition. Among the treasures we saw were the tomb treasures of Yura and Thuya who were the grandparents of Tutankhamen (if I remember correctly).  Incredible richness.  The tomb was found largely intact.  We then moved into the treasures of Tutankhamen.  I commented to someone that if the idea was to overwhelm what the impressiveness of the riches.  It worked.  It became almost too much to take it all in.
