Getting close


It is hard to believe that I will be leaving for sabbatical in just over two weeks.  January 20 will come awfully fast.  I am spending these days trying to work through my list of tasks.  Always seems to be one more.  This week I am trying to work through the insurance preparation to make sure that I am covered and to try to get some additional prescriptions before I go.  Slow and steady every day.  This week my days are fairly open but next week things start to stack up again so I want to get ahead of the game.

A number of folks have asked where I will be staying.  The North American College where I went to seminary sponsors the program - the Institute for Continuing Theological Education.  It has been housed in various places over the years. A few years ago the convent on the NAC campus was refurbished for use as a sabbatical center.  The number of sisters serving the college has decreased over the years and they now have other living quarters.  I can't remember if I ever actually went into the convent in my seminary years but I remember we gathered there before the Palm Sunday procession and made our way down the drive to the College chapel.  A great memory.

My Weekend

It is now Monday and I thought I would post a quick update on our doings. Classes start tomorrow so I don't know what my time will be like. On Saturday we took the train into Brussels for a guided tour of the city. It was nice since the lousy weather kind of dampened my spirits for a lot of running around when I first arrived. We visited the Cathedral, the Grand Place, and the Royal part of the city. Brussels has a long history and many chapters in it. I would like to find a good book that goes through the history of this area. What little I have learned has been fascinating. We had beautiful, sunny weather. Temperatures were in the 50s so I thought it was great. All weekend and today have also been sunny and pleasant. Cool at night but nice during the day. Folks say this is unusual weather so I suppose we will be in for more rain and cold in the next few weeks. On Sunday we had a tour by the son of a couple who works at the College. Off on my adventure

When the alarm rang at 3:30 a.m. on Friday I have to say that I was not all that excited to be getting up and ready for departure. But, I got showered, dressed and ready to go. I said goodbye to my parents and drove to my brother's house where my car will be stored. He took me to the airport. Didn't even mind getting up so early because, as he said, he would have beaten his raquetball partners in a couple of games by the time I took off. I made it to New York where the rain was coming down. My classmate, Fr. Tom Pettei picked me up and we headed into "The City." In the evening, we decided to go to Broadway for a show. By the time we arrived after our bus and subway ride we were soaked from head to foot. We got half price tickets to see "Curtains" which stars David Hyde Pierce (he played Niles in "Frasier"). From the City of Lights (and rain!)

Since I did not get a post out earlier this week, I thought I would do a posting from Paris where I am spending the week. This is a holiday weekend in much of Europe (Labor Day and Ascension Thursday). I arrived on Monday afternoon and made my way to the Montmartre area of Paris. I am staying in an apartment of the friends of one of the employees of the College. It is a bit out of the middle of things but in close access to the Metro and bus lines so I am having no trouble getting around. The bigger challenge has been the rain. It has been falling every day for a good part of the day. This has put a little crimp in my plans but with a little rearranging it is working out fine so far. I had only a few things I wanted to do. I have accomplished a couple already. On Tuesday I took a cooking class. A small group (4 of us) in the instructors apartment. I had trouble with a closed metro line and so arrived a little late.
