A Year of Grace and Blessing

It has been my tradition to write a Christmas letter every year to share with friends and family some of the highlights of the past 12 months. This year I thought I would use my blog since it will allow me to share pictures as well as reflections. Some will be new and others will be repeats from earlier posts. I encourage you to look over previous posts if you want more information on my experiences while on sabbatical in Leuven, Belgium. The New Year began with my annual New Year's Eve party. I try to take a different country or style of cooking each year. I enjoy researching recipes and trying new things. Since I was going on sabbatical I decided to do some Belgian specialties. I started with Mussels, continued with a Carbonade (a beef stew made with beer) and a chicken in beer. To accompany them I made Belgian Fries which are fried twice at different temperatures. Week Four

It is hard to believe that I am into my fourth week here in Leuven. In fact, Thursday will be the end of the fourth week. It is hard to believe that time is going so quickly. With classes, travel and all sorts of other activities it has been a full month. The coming month should be just as busy and I am sure it will seem like no time before I come to the midway point of my sabbatical. This weekend I am taking my first long weekend trip. I will be going on the Eurostar train from Brussels to London. I will spend a night in London where I hope to see a play and then head on to Cambridge. Cathedral parishioner Ann Nichols will be my host. She has promised me a tour of the Colleges of Cambridge and we hope to take in Evensong at the Chapel of King's College. This is a vesper service at which the famed King's College Choir sings. The night we are there the service will be broadcast live on BBC. From the City of Lights (and rain!)

Since I did not get a post out earlier this week, I thought I would do a posting from Paris where I am spending the week. This is a holiday weekend in much of Europe (Labor Day and Ascension Thursday). I arrived on Monday afternoon and made my way to the Montmartre area of Paris. I am staying in an apartment of the friends of one of the employees of the College. It is a bit out of the middle of things but in close access to the Metro and bus lines so I am having no trouble getting around. The bigger challenge has been the rain. It has been falling every day for a good part of the day. This has put a little crimp in my plans but with a little rearranging it is working out fine so far. I had only a few things I wanted to do. I have accomplished a couple already. On Tuesday I took a cooking class. A small group (4 of us) in the instructors apartment. I had trouble with a closed metro line and so arrived a little late.
